World Turrón Day is a commemoration held every November 7 worldwide, with the aim of promoting the consumption of this traditional Mediterranean sweet—or so the intention is, since the process has recently begun to have November 7 officially designated as World Turrón Day.

This initiative has been joined by the Jijona City Council, the Provincial Council of Alicante, the IGP Regulatory Council for Jijona and Alicante Turrón, and companies in the turrón and chocolate sector, including us, Turrones La Colmena.

If the process is completed, this proposal will be put to a vote at the UN General Assembly, and November 7 will be designated as International Turrón Day. The day that artisan turrón deserves in the Valencian Community and throughout the world.

World Turrón Day aims to give visibility to a sweet with centuries of history and tradition behind it. Both Jijona turrón and Alicante turrón are unique, traditional products of Mediterranean cuisine that may not be receiving the importance they deserve, both gastronomically and historically.

One of the objectives of celebrating World Turrón Day is to encourage its consumption throughout the year. Throughout history, eating turrón has been limited exclusively to Christmas. Now, in the 21st century, the aim of Jijona companies is to promote its consumption all year round, whether in the traditional way or by using it in turrón recipes.

Another objective of celebrating a World Turrón Day is to dispel the belief that this sweet is not a healthy food, when there is data showing the opposite. The original recipe for this product has been made the same way for centuries, using only natural ingredients in its production.

Ours are made with 70% almonds and 20% honey—ingredients rich in vitamins A, B, and E. 100% natural products. The remaining ingredients (10%) are sugar and egg white. 0% artificial products. We believe that turrón deserves to have its World Day, and much more.

When one thinks of turrón, it is impossible not to think of Jijona, because this traditional sweet and this town are inseparable. Therefore, every November 7, World Jijona and Alicante Turrón Day will be celebrated, always with its designation of origin and its authentic flavour. Our original flavour.

Jijona’s turrón-making tradition dates back to the 16th century, the oldest known, and there are centuries-old companies in the town that produce it (for example, our company, which has been selling it since 1854). That is why in Xixona we have a unique seal granted by a Regulatory Council that protects it from low-quality imitations. The name Jijona guarantees quality—unlike others.

Why November 7? Will it be celebrated worldwide?

The choice of the date of November 7 as World Turrón Day is neither coincidental nor random on the calendar. Turrón is made with Marcona almonds, a nut harvested during September. During October, turrón was made and, approximately, people from Jijona began selling their turrón after All Saints’ Day.

In honour of those first turrón makers from Jijona, and because around those dates our turrón begins to be sold all over the world, November 7 has been chosen as World Turrón Day. A perfect date.

It is expected that this International Turrón Day will be celebrated worldwide since our sweet is consumed in hundreds of countries around the world: France, Italy, or Germany, and even in Cuba, Argentina, or Colombia, as well as Japan and Russia.

World Turrón Day should not be confused with the Christmas Fair, which is held on the first weekend of December in Jijona.
