We do not normally have marzipan shaped like fruits and vegetables in stock because we make them shortly before 9 October for the ”mocadorà”, a typical Valencian celebration where it is customary to give them wrapped in a handkerchief along with other sweets. In addition, so you can enjoy them at your own pace, the marzipan fruits we sell are individually wrapped, so the marzipan does not dry out.
The handcrafted marzipan fruits and vegetables you can buy in our online shop are handmade one by one as they have been for years. Our marzipan fruit recipe has been in our recipe book for a long time. Made with the finest selected almonds, only natural colourings are used during production.
The custom of the Sant Dionís celebration is for the man to give the woman a handkerchief in which marzipan shaped like various fruits is wrapped, but there may also be turrón or other sweets, as tradition dictates.
The first evidence of giving sweets and marzipan for Sant Dionís and the mocadorà is found in a manuscript from 1747. It can be read that the origin dates back to 9 October, when a merchant named Gilabert bought from a confectionery shop «more than 8 pounds of sugar and cinnamon turrón» as well as other types of sweets.
Buying Sant Dionís marzipan fruits is increasingly common among young people who want to revive the old tradition of giving sweets on special dates. Although you can also buy typical marzipan figurines if you wish.
Ingredients: Almond (45%), sugar, glucose and fructose syrup, preservative E-200 and acidulant E-330, natural colourings (E-160a(ii), E-120, E-150a, E-161b, E-133), flavourings, pine nut and cinnamon. May contain traces of gluten and egg. Store in a cool, dry place.
