Turrón allergens

The allergens for all our artisanal turrones are detailed on each and every package alongside the ingredient list for each product. On one hand, the ingredient list contains allergens directly related to an ingredient, and then, duly specified, any possible traces that may be found.

Allergens in turrones is a topic that raises new questions every day. Firstly, depending on each turrón, the ingredient list is different and, therefore, the list of allergens is as well. Furthermore, as it is a seasonal and, above all, artisanal product, we find that each manufacturer has their own recipes, manufacturing processes, and ingredients. This increases the chances of finding different allergens.

Below, we will look at other allergens you often ask us about. If you do not find the answer, you can consult us personally and we will respond as soon as possible.

Allergens in our turrones and sweets

Although different allergens exist in our catalogue, it is only necessary to pay attention to the following:

  • Nuts with or without shells (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc.)
  • Gluten: Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, etc.)
  • Eggs and egg-based products
  • Peanuts and peanut-based products
  • Milk and its derivatives
  • Sesame seeds and sesame seed-based products
  • Sulphur dioxide and sulphites

This does not mean that all of them appear in every product, simply that they may appear in some of them.

Nuts

Inevitably, the main allergen in turrones is nuts (with or without shells). All our turrones are made with a nut base.

In our company, we mainly produce artisanal almond turrones; the best sellers are soft Jijona turrón and hard Alicante turrón, although there is also hazelnut turrón or peanut turrón. Even so, there is one turrón that does not contain nuts: coconut turrón.

Egg

Does turrón contain egg? Yes, although not all of them.

Both Jijona turrón and Alicante turrón contain egg. Our yolk turrones also contain egg as they are made with candied egg yolks. Some of our turrones that do not contain egg are our chocolate turrones or our vegan turrones, such as turrón a la piedra or marzipan / snow turrón.

Does Turrón contain gluten?

Contrary to what some people believe, turrón does not contain gluten. It is possible that in other countries or in turrones of questionable quality, flour is used as part of the preparation and ingredients. Our turrón does NOT contain flour of any kind; therefore, it is a gluten-free turrón.

The only products that contain gluten in our company belong to the pastry catalogue, such as pastelitos de gloria or pastelitos de yema. However, we are gradually adapting and removing gluten from all our products. Very few of our products contain GLUTEN.

Does turrón contain Lactose?

Although turrón usually does not contain lactose, there are some turrones with lactose in our catalogue. Milk chocolate turrón, in particular, contains milk. Since there are so few, we have provided a list of our turrones with lactose below:

Other allergens that turrón may contain

  • Sulphites: Sulphites (the famous E-220) are another allergen present in our products. They have been used for years as preservatives in many foods, although in some cases they are found naturally in them without being added. Sulphites are used only in our candied fruit for several reasons, primarily because they are an excellent antioxidant.
  • Sesame: Another allergen that can be found in our products is sesame. We only have one product that contains sesame: our terronico turrón, which contains sesame seeds.
  • Soy: Soy lecithin is an allergen found naturally in many foods. It is not a chemical. We use it in chocolate because it is a natural emulsifier that helps form a homogeneous mixture, as well as being a wetting agent that improves its smoothness in the mouth.

How do we inform our customers about allergens?

At Turrones La Colmena, we report all allergens in our turrones in accordance with regulations. Among the methods used, we highlight the following:

  • Labelling of each product: For several years, all allergen information must appear on the turrones and sweets we sell in the ingredient list of each product, with each allergen highlighted from the rest of the ingredients using a different typography (font type, style, background colour, etc.).
  • Below each description on our website: Below each description, you will find each allergen belonging to that specific turrón or sweet.
  • Technical product sheets: Our company has formulas and ingredient lists. In these, we are obliged to list all allergens and possible allergens with which the product may have come into contact.

What is cross-contamination?

Inevitably, in some cases, it is impossible for us to eliminate cross-contamination of allergens in our products.

Indirect cross-contamination occurs when there is a slight probability that our machinery comes into contact with other foods that may contain an allergen.

For example, if we produce peanut turrón, no matter how much we clean, some residue may always remain in the factory, potentially contaminating other turrones.

We try by all means to ensure there are no traces in our sweets, but the regulations are very strict in this regard and we always prefer to tell the truth.
